Spooky Spotlights – 1: Uncanny X-Men #143

This month at Comicexile we are celebrating Halloween all month long. So be sure to check in regularly for what I am calling Spooky Spotlights, my recommendations for Halloween themed comics or maybe some comics related media. I am not a huge horror fan, but I have read some terrify tales over the years and this is the time to celebrate them. So whether you are looking for tales of horror or just looking for a fun escape from the terror that is real life in 2020 be sure to check in often this month for recommendations under Spooky Spotlights.

First up on my list is a story titled “Demon” from Chris Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men #143 released in 1981. This story is set at Christmas, but ends up taking a terrifying turn pretty quickly. A young Kitty Pryde is left alone at the X-Mansion when she is attacked by a N’Garai, a survivor of an ancient race of dark and evil creatures seeking revenge on the X-men for a previous defeat. What follows is a survival story that is essentially Ridley Scott’s Alien with Kitty taking on the role of Ripley. If that description doesn’t sell you on reading it then I don’t know what else to say. It is a fun single issue story that helps to show how strong and resourceful Kitty is even as the teams newest and youngest recruit.

Even before I saw Alien, this issue was a favorite of mine, and one of the stories that cemented  Kitty Pryde as one of my all-time favorite X-men. If you want to check it out for yourself you can find the single issue here or in the excellent Days of Future past collection available
